Spies Cafe - Stasi, Behind the Berlin Wall

National Press Club - Saturday July 20th, 2002

With so many spies, counter spies, spy authors, and intelligence people in town for the opening of the International Spy Museum we were fortunate to have some of the leading experts available to meet, and discuss their experiences.

Werner Juretzko held us spellbound with details of life as a Stasi prisoner. Hal Schwartz recounted his time in Berlin, with Army Intelligence, and gave a insight into the wall, and the Stasi. He described the time in Berlin when President Kennedy visited, and gave his famous speech. Dan Doyle gave accounts of his many trips through Checkpoint Charlie, including the time he went back and forth 13 times in one day, bringing equipment for a concert in the back of his car. The authorities refused to allow a driver to fetch the equipment, lest he defected and did not come back!
